Police ID Man Who Died In Custody

Luis Alfonso Martinez Passed Out In Patrol Car

EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police have identified the 50-year-old man who died in police custody Sunday after he smashed his truck into the front yard of a home.

The crash happened at Hunter and Yuma drives in the Lower Valley at about 4 p.m. on Sunday Luis Alfonso Martinez, showing signs intoxication, walked away from the crash and initially refused help from firefighters that were dispatched to the scene, police said.

Martinez was taken into custody on suspicion of drunken driving, “He was placed in the back of the patrol car. The officers were observing him and they observed that he became unresponsive -- he wasn’t answering their questions, he wasn’t talking, so they again summoned fire personnel,” said Det. Mike Baranyay, of the El Paso Police Department.

Martinez was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators from the Crimes Against Persons, Special Traffic Investigations and Internal Affairs divisions were called to the scene to investigate.

Police said a passenger was in the truck at the time of the crash and was not hurt.
