Police Department will partially pay for city's mistake

El Paso City Manager

EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso Police Department will have to pay $500,000 to make up for a mistake made by the city.

As KFOX14 News has reported, the El Paso Municipal Police Officer's Association disagrees with the way the city has paid police.

The city recently settled a lawsuit and agreed to pay $1.2 million in back pay and the same amount in unbudgeted pay for this year.

City Manager Joyce Wilson said she found leftover money in the city's budget and expects new revenues to come in. The police department will still need to cut its budget by $500,000.

Those cuts will happen through cutting some overtime for the officers and even pushing back the Police Academy for a couple of months.

The police association's attorney, Jim Jopling, spoke to KFOX14 off camera and said, "Without having all of the details, the union would be unhappy if any of the money came out of its budget."

Wilson said making up the money is not going to be a problem.

"I've indicated, at this point, I don't want to delay the academy because we're actually making progress in terms of increasing numbers and the academy takes a long time for officers to get through," Wilson said.
