No refusal during holiday weekend

EL PASO, Texas —

The Texas Department of Transportation and the El Paso Police Department have said that extra officers will be on patrol for New Year’s Eve.

There are a couple of options if you've been out drinking and you need to get home.

AAA is offering a “Tipsy Tow” service. If someone has had too much to drink, they can call AAA. AAA will tow the person’s car home and give the person a ride.

Sun City Cab is offering a similar service. Sun City said the person must be at a bar and have their license and keys with them.

“No Refusal Weekend” means that a person suspected of drunken driving must either provide a breath sample or be subject to a blood test.

Fifty-six percent of all deadly crashes in El Paso this year have been alcohol-related. Seventy-four people have died in traffic collisions.

El Paso Police Department spokesman Mike Baranyay said the department is very passionate about stopping drunken driving.

"If you were to be able to go back and ask all 74 of those people that died on our roadways this year if, when they left their home, they thought they were going to die that night, their answer would be 'no,'" Baranyay said.

Baranyay said that a first DWI offense can have serious consequences.

"Assuming your blood-alcohol level is below 0.15, assuming that you don't have a child younger than 15 years of age in the vehicle and assuming that you don't have an open container in your vehicle, it's a class B misdemeanor,” Baranyay said. “That's an offense that could land you in jail for up to 180 days."

In New Mexico, a first DWI offense could result in six months to one year of license revocation, up to 90 days in jail, mandatory DWI school and one year requiring an ignition interlock in your vehicle. Depending on the circumstances, it could be worse.
