Police: Couple sped away in stolen truck from San Antonio

ANTHONY, Texas —

Anthony police officials said they arrested two people who attempted to flee in a stolen vehicle from San Antonio.

Police said they spotted a suspicious vehicle Sunday afternoon at the Pilot Travel Center on Antonio Street.

The driver, Summer Martinez, 18, and passenger, Miguel Gonzalez, 28, were sitting inside a parked Toyota pickup when they were approached by officers, the El Paso Times reported.

When police attempted a traffic stop, Martinez sped off near South Desert Boulevard and Vinton Road.

Martinez later lost control, and the pickup spun out in an open desert area. Police said the two fled the scene. 

Officials from the El Paso County Sheriff's office along with Department of Public Safety aided in the search for the couple, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials provided air support.

The El Paso Times reported that the couple was found two hours later hiding in a shed behind a home in Vinton. Police told the El Paso times that the home's owner called law enforcement when the owner noticed something suspicious.

The pickup was reported stolen out of San Antonio.

Gonzalez is facing evading arrest and/or detention, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and criminal trespassing charges. He bail was set at $47,000.

Martinez is facing evading arrest and or detention, evading arrest with motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and criminal trespassing charges. Her bail was set at $77,500 for those charges.

Martinez is also being held without bond for violating her parole.
