Police: Auto thefts down 49 percent in 2013

EL PASO, Texas —

Officials with the El Paso Police Department said auto thefts are down about 50 percent for the year.

Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 12, auto thefts in the city are down 49 percent compared to this time last year.

Officials said the Honda Civic is the top stolen vehicle for 2013 so far, and in 2012, the Ford F-150 was the top vehicle with a total of 76 trucks reported stolen. The Civic was the second-most-stolen vehicle in 2012 with 59 reportedly stolen vehicles.

In 2012, auto thefts were down 18 percent compared to 2011.

According to the Auto Theft Task Force, these are the top stolen vehicles of 2013 so far:

Honda Civic (includes CRX): 11
Ford Ranger: 3
Ford Mustang: 3
Honda Accord: 3
Jeep Wrangler: 3
Nissan Maxima: 2
Acura Integra: 2
Audi A4: 2
Ford F-150: 2
Chevrolet Cobalt: 2
Jeep Grand Cherokee: 2
Nissan Altima: 2
