EL PASO, Texas —
Police officials said Ramon Meraz was located at a shelter in Juarez.
Meraz was initially reported missing Monday afternoon when he was last seen at his home on the 500 block of Canal Road.
Police said his caretaker arrived at the home Wednesday morning and was unable to find Meraz.
The international bridge is walking distance from Meraz's home, and his son told KFOX14 Wednesday that Meraz may have crossed.
"He doesn't like going to Mexico, but the thought has crossed my mind," said Joel Meraz, Meraz's son.
Joel Meraz said he got the call at about 9 a.m. today.
"He'll go and, of course, maybe an hour later, he'll come back eventually, but this is, I guess, the longest that it's been," said Joel Meraz.
His father, Ramon Meraz, was last seen Monday by a neighbor. His caretaker, a woman who lives next door, went to check on him Wednesday. A plate of food was left untouched, the house prim, and Ramon Meraz was nowhere to be found.
"As of this morning, when I started looking for him, I have not seen him, and it's really not like him to leave and not come back," said Joel Meraz.
Joel Meraz has spent the day searching. He looked around the neighborhood, the border highway, local credit unions, even going back to his old neighborhood in central El Paso to see if his father went back. Joel Meraz hopes his father has been taken in on this cold night and that someone, somewhere, has him safe.
"Just being worried for your loved one, not knowing what's going on. That's what's going through my mind right now," said Joel Meraz.
Ramon Meraz was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket, blue jeans and a Korean cap.
Ramon Meraz is described as 5 feet 4 inches with brownish gray hair, brown eyes and a medium skin tone and weighing around 160 pounds.
Anyone with information on Meraz's whereabouts is asked to call police at 915-832-4400.
