EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police officers early Saturday morning were using a License Plate Reader on their marked police vehicle while driving through the parking lot of Freelons Nightclub in Northeast El Paso.

A spokesman for the department said the License Plate Reader came up with a "hit" as it passed a silver Hyundai Sonata. Police with the Auto Theft Task Force Unit responded and arrested 36-year-old Marcus Betts as he attempted to drive off in the Sonata, according to the spokesman.

Upon further investigation, police said Betts had rented the Sonata from AVIS Rent-a-Car last July and never returned the car.

Betts has been booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a felony charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $10,000.
