Plans To Expand Country Club Road

EL PASO, Texas —

The possible expansion of Country Club Road in the Upper Valley could be two years away, but homeowners in the area are already getting warned about construction in the future.

The Public Service Board is scheduled to improve sewer lines on Country Club Road from Doniphan Drive to Westside Drive. Since the street will have to be torn up to do so, the city sees an opportunity to upgrade the road as well.

"It's pretty congested this time of day," said David Hughes from West El Paso.

Some city representatives are trying to get the community's input on what kind of Country Club road they'd like to see.

"If they can ease the congestion and increase safety for people like me who bike, that would be great," said Hughes.

The plans are not official but city council may have to consider anything from a three-lane road to a four-lane roadway with bike lanes and sidewalks. That's a great idea for drivers, but for homeowners it's a concern.

"I wouldn't feel good living in front of a four-lane road," said Bill Kaltenbich, who lives along Country Club Road.

Kaltenbich has seen traffic increase on Country Club in the last seven years. He knows something needs to be done to alleviate congestion but hopes the city doesn't turn Country Club into a major highway.

"I think it would be too much traffic, they would take too much of an easement up and it might devalue the property," said Kaltenbich.
