Pit bulls involved in jogger attack may live

EL PASO, Texas —

The four pit bulls who attacked an El Paso jogger a little more than a week ago were supposed to be put down Sunday. But thanks to some dedicated activists and heartbroken owners, the dogs may have another lease on life.

"It's hard. It's not the same. We go home and they're not there. Sometimes I don't even feel like being home," said Juan Trevizo and Jessica Samaniego, the owners of the dogs.

The two have been fighting for their dogs from the start. On Saturday, along with the help of No Kill El Paso, a step forward was made.

"We filed an injunction yesterday and this morning we were able to get a temporary restraining order signed by the judge to prevent them from putting the dogs down and allow us to have a day in court," said John Conwell, an activist with No Kill El Paso.

As KFOX14 reported, about a week and a half ago, Trevizo and Samaniego's four pit bulls attacked a jogger in front of their Lower Valley home. The dogs were deemed "not adoptable" because they were involved in an unprovoked attack. Animal Services quarantined the animals and were getting ready to euthanize them. But No Kill El Paso said the dogs were never given the proper tests to show whether or not they showed aggression.

"For right now, it prevents and blocks the city from taking any action to kill the dogs," said Conwell.

The dogs are safe for 14 days, until they have their day in court.

"They deserve to have that court date, to be returned to us. They have that right," said Samaniego.

"As many wrongs as were involved in this, there's one right that can come out of it. And that's a true evaluation of the dogs and an evaluation of whether they really are aggressive," said Conwell.

Conwell says there have been cases where animals have accidentally been put down early.

"That has been my biggest fear. But I'm leaving it in God's hands," said Samaniego.

Animal Services didn't want to comment, pending litigation -- saying only, the dogs are still quarantined.

An exact court date has not yet been set.
