Pileup Shuts Down Eastbound I-10

Witnesses said a semi-truck slammed into a Ford Ranger that now is nothing more then a ball of metal. It was curled between the semi, and an RV towing it.

"I looked in my rear view mirror and saw this RV directly behind me, and as I turned around I felt the impact," said Mike Mize, a truck driver involved in the accident.

The impact Mize felt was the semi hitting the back of the RV, and then the RV hitting his truck.

"And a split section later a Roush racing team truck whizzed past me, doing 50 mph, and slammed into the truck that was in front of me and his tractor exploded. I mean it just exploded," said Mize.

Mize jumped out of his cab and helped the first person he saw; the driver who apparently started it all.

"I asked him, didn't you know this was a place to slow down, and he said, he said, he wasn't paying attention, and when he looked up, it was too late," said Mize.

It's a place to slow down because the accident happened just hundreds of feet away from the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol checkpoint.

"I'd say they are very lucky. I'd say the two guys in that tractor right there, that truck that caused all this, they are very lucky. I didn't expect to see anybody alive in there," Mize told KFOX.

Law enforcement in the area said the speed limit is just too high.

"Unfortunately the speeds out here is 80 mph, until you take the exit going to the checkpoint, we've asked TXDOT multiple times to reduce that," said Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West.

"Slow down, be courtesy, check your mirrors at all times, that's very important especially with the speed limit at 80 right now," said Texas Highway Patrol Trooper David Rodriguez.

Mize is most upset that it was a fellow truck driver who started it all.

"This is a serious job. It's a serious job and you can't be driving on the road, unaware of what's going on, and what you're doing," said Mize.

Law enforcement on scene said four people were taken to Thomason hospital, but none with life-threatening injuries. Two were from the semi-truck , the other two were in the RV.

The semi that witnesses said started it all is owned by Roush Racing. The truck is part of the AAA NASCAR team.
