Photo of brutal murder circulates on Facebook

Caption states it happened in El Paso

By Martina Valverde

El PASO, Texas. —

A picture circulates around Facebook showing a brutal murder in the middle of the street. The caption states the scene is in El Paso. The pictures caption also says the killer is an off-duty El Paso police officer, but police confirm it clearly is not.

El Pasoans gave their opinion saying it affects how people view El Paso, especially with all the violence happening right across the border where more than 3,000 people have been killed in Juarez’s ongoing drug war.

"Oh wow, that's not cool at all. That photo should not be on Facebook at all," said Stephanie Rojas.

What angers Rojas more about photo is the caption. It reads in part:

“Three armed felons crossed the U. S. Border and attempted to rob an off duty El Paso police officer dressed in civilian clothes while he stood in front of a bank. The plan was for two of them to grab his backpack and toss it to an accomplice on a stolen motorcycle. However, the well prepared police officer shot all of them, killing two immediately. The third was shot in both arms and bled to death before the ambulance arrived."

Rojas and others who said they’ve lived in El Paso their entire lives know the photo wasn't taken anywhere in El Paso.

"I don't recognize anything from around it," sad Rojas.

"The buildings and everything it doesn't look like El Paso," said Ildo Barra.

A spokesman from the El Paso Police Department sent KFOX 14 this statement about the photo:

"These photos are not El Paso, nor is the policeman depicted in the photograph an El Paso police uniform," said Darrel Petry.

Some El Pasoans said with 800 million plus users of Facebook and estimated 130 friends of each of those users, the damage has already been done. They said not only is the damage to El Paso's image, but also El Paso's economy.

"They're going to be scared to come because they think that's going to happen to them," said Kathryn Aguilar.

"People already talk bad about us. With that it gives us bad publicity," said Rojas.

Its unknown where the picture came from or how the circulation of it started, but some speculate where the killings actually took place.

"They probably think of Juarez," said Rojas.

"It does look like Juarez," said Barra.

KFOX 14 did call Facebook to see what they do in situations like this where law enforcement has said the photos caption is false and see if they'd take it down.

KFOX 14 left a message Sunday afternoon, but hasn’t heard back.
