EL PASO, Texas —

Some 500 signatures according to the El Paso Times were on a petition to recall city rep. Cortney Niland.

The petition was filed by former city mayor Ray Salazar. He had filed his intent to recall the representative in September.

The next step, the city clerk has 10 days to verify at least 385 of the signatures on the petition are registered voters who live in Niland's District 8.

If those signatures are verified, the question of whether to recall Niland will go on the May 2013 ballot.

Salazar is part of the Coalition for Responsive Government, which opposes the demolition of City Hall to make way for the $50 million Downtown ballpark and believes voters should have decided whether to build the ballpark.
