EL PASO, Texas —

In the spirit of the petition for Texas secession, El Pasoans are hoping to separate the city from the state and remain a part of the United States.

As KFOX14 previously reported more than 100,000 people signed an online petition asking the government to let Texas leave the United States of America.

The petition, which was created Nov. 9, greatly surpassed its goal of 20,000 signatures in a matter of days.

Now, a new petition asks for El Paso to be removed from the state of Texas has emerged. The petition claims that the city is "proud to be part of the United States and wants no part of a state whom publicly contemplates secession from our great nation."

The petition was created Tuesday and has until Dec. 13 to reach 20,000 signatures in order to generate a response from the White House. As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, the petition has 62 signatures.

The petition needs 150 signatures in order to be searchable on WhiteHouse.gov.

According to the website, once the petition reaches the number of needed signatures, it is placed in a queue to be reviewed by the White House. Additional signatures are accepted once the goal is met.

Once the White House responds, signees will receive an email from the White House to inform them that the government has reviewed and responded to the petition.
