Personality Disagreement Between Animal Rescuer, Health Official Could Hurt Abandoned Pets

EL PASO, Texas —

Rescue organizations are now going through an application process in order to pick up pets from the Animal Control facility on Fred Wilson before they are euthanized. Not everyone is happy with that process.

Martha Williams, the director of Pet Guardian Angel, is no longer allowed to pick up pets who are within hours of being doomed for death.

"When you think we had six animals on hold that he put down because he decided we didn't fit in to his idea of what it should be in a rescue group," said Williams.

The person Williams refers to is Ray Sim, the new director of Animal Services for the Health Department. He said guidelines in place since September state that any organization who wants to participate in the pet adoption program through Animal Control must apply and get accepted in order to pick up pets from there. One organization, Pet Guardian Angel, was denied that opportunity. Williams said it's because she's not well liked.

"I'm cut off because of the people who are on the advisory board who in effect are competitors of ours who run other organizations," said Williams.

Sim said William's organization was denied because of an attitude problem.

"Her attitude and disparaging remarks were not one of collaboration, but divisive in nature and disparaging and certainly was not meeting the guidelines that were set up," said Sim.

Even though Sim said Williams isn't meeting those guidelines, Sim encourages the public to take and adopt pets from organizations like Pet Guardian Angel.

"It would certainly help us by defraying the number of animals we receive, to have those animals taken to those organizations that generally do not euthanize animals," said Sim.

Sim said Pet Guardian Angel will have another opportunity to apply next year around September.
