People on streets of Washington, D.C.: We'd visit El Paso despite border violence

EL PASO, Texas —

For years now, CQ Press has ranked El Paso as one of the safest big cities in the United States, despite the Sun City sitting right next to Juarez, Mexico, a major battlefield for the Mexican drug cartels.

That's why KFOX 14's D.C. Bureau hit the streets of the nation's capitol with the news of "security concerns" for the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight.

KFOX 14 asked would people from other cities think twice if they were to visit El Paso?

"Why not? I'd like to see all that America has to offer," Brian Thompson from New Jersey said.

"It doesn't make me not want to go to El Paso, if I have reason to," Ken Shields of Washington D.C. said. "I've been there."

Tom and Julie Durda, from Minneapolis, Minn., said they would go to El Paso. They said they think of it as a U.S. city; not a town on a dangerous border.

KFOX 14 continues to try to get answers when it comes to the chancellor's temporary decision to cancel the fight.

KFOX 14 put in a call to Francisco Gonzalez Cigarroa's office

U.T.'s public affairs office said the University of Texas system has no further comments on the matter.

KFOX 14 will continue to try to get better answers.

In the meantime, El Paso City Council is expected to vote on whether to have the fight at the Sun Bowl stadium Tuesday.

KFOX 14 will be in council chambers and will bring you the latest.
