People Spending Less On Halloween Costumes Nationwide

EL PASO, Texas —

A study just released shows another sign of the times, people are spending at least $10 less on costumes this year compared to last year. But that may not be the case in El Paso where it looks like the Sun City is once again bucking the national economic trend.

At Spirit Halloween in East El Paso, they were scaring up some big business on Saturday.

"We've had within the last week average sales have been anywhere from like $100 up to $300," said Yvette Armendariz, assistant manager at Spirit Halloween.

Those are huge numbers compared to the nationwide average. The National Retail Federation said people are spending about $56 on their costume this year, compared to $66 last year. And locally, the biggest and best sales are just rolling in.

"The last three days and today have been the busiest, we've got a lot of last minute shoppers," Armendariz told KFOX.

"Maybe high end $75," said Joshua Doone, as he explained how much he would be willing to spend on his costume. "You're going to spend as much as you want to spend to have a good time, and it all depends on how much of a good time you want to have."

"Like $120," said Gilbert-Ian Ruden, as he showed KFOX all of the items for his costume. "Money, I work hard for my money, so it's a lot of money to spend."

But just like Doone, Ruden believed it is a good use of his hard earned cash.

"It's actually very worth it because it's only once a year, and I think my costume is different from other people's, so I think I am going to look very good," said Ruden.

The employees at Spirit Halloween said if you don't want to spend so much money, and get a jump on your costume shopping for next year, everything will be 50 percent off starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
