Pedestrians Identified In Lee Trevino Crash

EL PASO,Texas —

The names of the two pedestrians who died crossing Lee Trevino Drive have been identified.

Police told KFOX that 26-year-old Orlando Figueroa and 22-year-old Angela Gonzalez had just came out of one of the bars on Lee Trevino Drive.

They were crossing the southbound lanes when a silver Volkswagen Jetta driven northbound by 33-year-old Eric Barajas struck both of them.

Figueroa and Gonzalez died at the scene.

The incident happened on Lee Trevino Drive near the Towne Center shopping center shortly after 2 a.m. Friday.

The investigation is ongoing and it is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors.

Residents in the area told a KFOX crew that people often do not use the intersection to cross the street at Lee Trevino. They said people like to go to the different bars and restaurants in the area, but to cross the street they sometimes have to walk roughly a city block to get to an intersection with a crosswalk.

El Paso City Council Rep. Steve Ortega said a traffic light would not help in this case.

“Slowing down traffic or stopping traffic is not a justification to put a stop light in the middle of the street. You can’t do that according to national standards,” Ortega told KFOX. “One of the things that we are going to be talking about is additional enforcement, but beyond that, there is not much that can be done,” Ortega said.
