Party desert sparks questions about ownership and safety in Red Sands

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

After three people were injured at a desert party in the Red Sands area, KFOX News investigated ownership of the land in the desolate area and whether they are monitoring the area.

Sheriff Deputies responded to a fight at 15600 Montana Ave. at about 9:50 p.m. Sunday night and found a 25-year-old male with a stab wound to the abdomen.

The lot in which the fight occurred belongs to Leopoldo Gonzales, according to the central appraisal district.

Gonzales could not be reached for comment because his listed address turned out to be a vacant reality business at 416 E. San Antonio Ave., which is listed to another person with a P.O. Box address.

The property, in far east El Paso is valued at $44,400 and Gonzales is reportedly delinquent on property taxes.

“It's not uncommon to get calls in that area," said Angelica Becerra, the public information officer for the Sherff's Office. "Party-goers are out there. When we hear that address -- we already know.”

This fight may have started when another group showed up.

All the victims were in their twenties, deputies said.

People often ride their ATV’s in that area.
