Participation down for annual Race for the Cure

By Jesse Martinez

EL PASO, Texas —

The 21st annual Susan G. Komen El Paso Race for the Cure is Feb. 17 and officials said participation numbers are down by about a third compared to last year.

The 36 percent decline in participation may result in a $100,000 loss to the men and women of the El Paso community troubled with breast cancer, officials said.

Funds raised from the race go to free mammograms, breast cancer treatment, diagnostic and transportation services for uninsured people in El Paso.

"We are alarmed at the current decrease in race registration numbers," said Stephanie Flora, executive director of the El Paso affiliate. "Thousands of men and women in El Paso depend on Komen funding to receive life-saving mammograms and breast cancer treatment. Those services are in jeopardy if we do not raise these funds."

As much as 75 percent of the funds from the race remain in El Paso County while the remainder funds national research, officials said.

In 2012, $280,000 was granted to local organizations that provide breast health services to those without insurance.

There is still time to register for the Feb. 17 race. Online team and individual registration is available through Feb. 8 at noon.

Walk-up registration will be Feb 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Feb. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at Sunland Park Mall. Registration will also be available Feb. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at Academy Sports and Outdoors at 201 Americas Ave.
