Part Of Auto Salvage Yard Catches Fire Near Homes

EL PASO, Texas —

Part of the A&B Auto Salvage yard on the 13300 block of Montana Avenue in far east El Paso goes up in flames just feet from homes, according to El Paso Fire Department officials.

Flames and smoke swelled up just after 10 a.m. on Monday, next to Ray Padilla's home. He got a phone call from his wife moments after the blaze began.

"She called me, said, 'You need to come home, the back yard is on fire,'" said Padilla, who then raced to his home to find a hectic scene. "You could hear the glass breaking, everything, it was pretty loud. It got pretty intense, flames were shooting up probably a good 20-30 feet."

The big concern for Padilla was the wind on Monday. The wind gusted to 43 mph in east El Paso according to KFOX 14 weather nets.

"All of the sudden, there was one point where it shifted towards our house. It got pretty scary, but by that point, the fire department was already here," Padilla told KFOX 14.

Padilla is glad he still has his home, considering what could have happened.

"It could have been a lot worse, especially [because] there is a lot of debris on the outside of this street where, when the wind comes in, all the tumbleweeds and everything catches on this corner," he said.

A cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
