Parents Protest SISD Board's Approval Of New School Boundaries

EL PASO, Texas —

On Thursday, parents came out to the Socorro Independent School District Service Center to make a point. The parents all belong to the John Drugan school and they decided to protest because they feel the school board voted unfairly regarding the school boundaries. They're hoping that this event will open the eyes of the board trustees and administrators and come up with more alternatives.

As we reported, the SISD board voted to approve the new school boundaries proposed by administration in order to make room for the rapid growth. One of the most controversial adjustments proposed was to move some of the John Drugan students who live west of Joe Battle to other schools while students who leave on the eastside where the school is located would stay at Drugan. One of the parent, Yvette Flores said the board failed to take a lot of things into consideration.

"A lot of parents around the neighborhood have moved two to three times already. They have been affected in their education, learning and everything. Now that the TAKS test is coming that's going to affect them more," said Flores.

Vice president of the board of trustees, Craig Patton, said it was a very difficult decision the board had to make. He knows it's impossible to please everyone but the adjustments had to be done in order to avoid over crowding at the schools.
