EL PASO, Texas —

Federal officers seized nearly $2.2 million worth of smuggled marijuana at a port of entry in El Paso over the weekend.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Monday announced the seizures at El Paso. Officials said the total haul topped 934 pounds, including 437 pounds confiscated Saturday night.

CBP said a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to an SUV at the Paso Del Norte International Bridge. The marijuana was in bundles in a floor compartment.

Officers detained the driver, 34-year-old Julio Chavez Renova of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. He faces federal charges including importation of a controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. Renova remains in custody at the El Paso County Jail and is being held without bond.
