Outlet Mall Set To Open In El Paso

April 28, 2006 —

A major announcement for El Paso's economy was revealed Friday.

In just a few months, a desert area in Northwest El Paso will be transformed into a 385,000-square-foot factory outlet mall.

The new shopping mecca is expected to create 800 new jobs for the area, not to mention another 300 temporary construction jobs.

El Pasoans with whom KFOX spoke Friday have no doubt the new center will be a success.

"'Cause it would probably bring in people from Las Cruces to shop on the weekend. Of course, people from the border would come and shop over here too," said Yvonne Villarreal, of West El Paso.

"An outlet mall, oh I think there are a lot of people that could use it, you know. There are a lot of people who can't buy at special stores at Sunland and so on, and maybe they could go there to get nice things," said Rose Mary Wheeler, of El Paso's Upper Valley.

Construction on the new outlet mall is expected to begin this summer.

Retailers for the mall have not been announced.
