SANTA TERESA, N.M. —

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 700 pounds of marijuana hidden in the bed of a Ford F-350 flatbed truck.

Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the truck entered the Santa Teresa Port of Entry from Mexico. Officers selected the vehicle for a secondary exam, and officers noticed non-factory compartments underneath the bed of the truck.

Officers found 10 large metal boxes containing tightly compressed marijuana. The drugs weighed a total of 701.5 pounds.

"This seizure was made due to the vigilance of our officers utilizing a combination of tools and experience to detect a deeply concealed load of narcotics," said Joanne Thale-Lembo CBP Santa Teresa port director. "The sophistication of this concealment method shows the extent to which smugglers go to introduce contraband to the streets of America."

The vehicle's driver, Jose Manuel Gomez Serrano, a 55-year-old man from Portland, Ore. was arrested on federal drug smuggling charges and was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Facility.
