Only On KFOX: Students Almost Get Hit By Cars For Charity

El Paso, TEXAS —

Drivers heading down Mesa Street near Sunland Park had to keep a watchful eye out Saturday for students from El Paso High School, as they tried to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Several kids could be seen ducking and dodging traffic, which drivers say made them nervous.

"She ran right in front of me, I almost hit her," one driver said.

While KFOX does not dispute the charity itself, many drivers said they found the method of raising the money questionable.

"I think they should be more careful with cars," driver Robert Estrada said.

About a dozen kids could be seen running in and out of traffic. As all this was happening, not a single adult supervisor could be found. KFOX finally met up with the students' advisor outside a supermarket well away from traffic, but he did not want to give us his name or answer any questions.

EPISD officials have released this statement about the fundraiser to KFOX: "The district does provide clear guidelines for on-campus based fund-raising conducted by student groups. If these efforts are off-campus, then all groups must comply with city regulations regarding solicitation of funds. Supervision and student safety is the top priority regardless of the location where these off-campus fundraising events are held."
