Only On KFOX: Manhunt Under Way In Northeast

EL PASO, Texas —

A routine traffic stop turned into a manhunt in Northeast El Paso Thursday morning .

El Paso police pulled over a man they said was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic around 1:30 a.m .

After police called a K-9 unit out to search the car, the man got nervous jumped over the guardrail and ran from police into the desert nearby, police said .

Police began a search with a dozen officers looking for the man in the desert. They also solicited the help of military police because they believe the man may have run onto Fort Bliss property.

However, after several hours of searching overnight, officers could not find the man.

The man is described as a light-skinned Hispanic man in his early 40s .

El Paso police said the car turned out to be stolen. Police said they ran the license plates of the car, they found that the plates didn't match the registration and the vehicle identification numbers on the car were different.

Police had the car impounded and the case has been turned over to the auto theft task force with the El Paso police department.
