Dona Ana County Sheriff's investigators wonder why victim didn't have visible injuries.

A lot of questions are circling the death of a 40 year old Chaparral man. Shots were reportedly fired, but the victim doesn't appear to have any wounds. The suspicious death forced Dona Ana County Sheriffs deputies to tape off a Chaparral neighborhood late Tuesday night.

Neighbors in the 400 block of Mesilla View Street called 911 after hearing what they described as gun shots.

"It was the resident here, she heard some noises, and she looked outside and saw this person lying on the ground. Then she saw this other lady run up to him trying to help him out," said Sgt. Mark Perea, Dona Ana County Sheriff's.

Perea said the woman running to the man's aid is possibly his wife. Apparently, the pair had been arguing earlier. Officials said the man jumped out of her car and started running down the street. He was found lying on someone's driveway with a gun and knife nearby.

Deputies said the victim died on his way to the hospital, but whether the victim was shot at is still a mystery.

Because there are no external injuries in the body we're treating this as a suspicious death of course, an unattended death, said Perea.

Investigators will have a better sense of what happened once autopsy results are in. The body has been taken to Albuquerque for the autopsy.

Family members told deputies them the man suffers from some sort of mental condition. It's unknown if it caused his death.

Officials are not releasing the man's name, but say he lives on that same street, Mesilla View.
