ONLY ON KFOX - Birds Stolen: Owner Says Police Not Helping

Elvira Zamora, the owner of pet connection in East El Paso says someone stole 75 to 80 exotic birds on Wednesday from her store.

"It was African grays, parrots, tropical ones, they're not known here, quaker parrots, love birds, canaries, every parrot here that is exotic you are going to find here, that is what they stole," said Zamora.

She believes the thieves knew what they were doing when they broke her windows and searched for the birds.

"They took them on a day when we just barely received them about two weeks ago so they took them, and they know that those are the only parrots in the world, they are very, very expensive," Zamora said.

She said they were worth thousands of dollars. Its money she believes she will never get back because she said the El Paso Police Department is not doing anything about it.

"It took about 30 minutes for police to get here and it takes about two weeks to see a detective about this case," Zamora said.

Zamora believes that's too long. She told KFOX she believes the reason police can't help her sooner is because they have too many cases.

"And I ask them can it be one case at a time and they say no it's impossible they do 17-20 cases at one time. And they don't promise me anything," said Zamora.

The El Paso Police Department said they are trying to work with Zamora.

"If there is not a lot of information, and there is not a lot of workable leads, well unfortunately until new leads come in there is not a lot they can do on that case. Some cases are going to be waiting for the processing of evidence such as this case," said El Paso Police Departent spokesman Javier Sambrano.

Zamora said police did take fingerprints at the scene, but she said they have not looked at that evidence yet.

Zamora said she did not have insurance on the birds, and she is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information on the location of the birds.

Meanwhile the El Paso Police Department said they are not overloaded with cases and that they have assigned a detective to Zamora's case.
