One In Four Didn't Read Book Last Year

EL PASO, Texas —

Debbie Cewning spends most of her day with her nose buried in a book.

"At work, at home waiting for people. I read a lot. I usually have a book with me at all times," said Chewning.

Chewning might be one of the few adults picking up a book these days.

A survey by the Associated Press reveals one in four adults read no books last year. A total of 1,003 adults were interviewed between Aug. 6 and 8. The poll found the majority of those who said they read were women and seniors. Two-thirds of those interviewed chose religious books among other types.

Despite the poll, one El Paso librarian disagrees less people are reading books.

"We have seen here at El Paso Public Library a substantial increase in the number of people checking out books and related resources. This year we topped the 2 million mark," said Carol Brey-Casiano.

Analysts suggest books are having to compete with the internet and other sources. Brey-Casiano she hasn't noticed that to be a bad thing.

"Because of the great amount of usage we're seeing with books being checked out we really think that books are not being replaced by computers. Instead, what's happening, there's a great synergy," said Brey-Casiano.

"A lot of people don't realize what they could get out of reading. You could go to movies, but if you read the book the movie is based on there's more in the book than in the movies," said Chewning.

"There's a book for every mood. So there's nothing you can't find," said Chewning.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. The El Paso Public Library System encourages people to stop by at any public library to get a card and start checking out books free of charge. The libraries also have programs to promote reading for all ages.
