Old Crime Hits New Area

EL PASO, Texas —

An old crime finds its way into a brand new neighborhood. Vandals and thieves are carrying out their dirty work in one of El Paso's newest Northeast El Paso neighborhoods. Broad daylight is not exactly when most thieves commit their crimes. Staci Leis, an expecting mother of two, said that's exactly when she was robbed Monday.

"It really scared me. I took dinner to my husband. He is on base. I wasn't gone any more than an hour. When I came back I noticed our grill was missing, the gas to the grill was missing, and my son's toys were missing," Leis told KFOX.

She filed a police report. The police told her the grill may have been sold for scrap metal. They also told here this isn't the first time they've gotten reports from the Mesquite Hill neighborhood.

Other residents report having their lawn ornaments stolen from right in front of their door.

Karl Luth has lived in the area for tree months. He said this type of crime is a challenge for a new neighborhood.

"You really have to keep a watchful eye, especially now. As time goes by, I think it's going to be easier to identify who belongs and who doesn't belong in the area," Luth said.

Not everyone who lives in Mesquite Hills reports having problems.

Naomi Way has been living in the area for four months she said, "So far I love it. It's a new neighborhood. There is a lot of kids out here for my 6-month-old son. It's been great."

It's not just theft. Earlier in the week, mailboxes were vandalized. They have since been painted over.

Those who live in the area said they have seen more police patrol over the last few days. Police encourage anyone who has had property stolen to report it.
