EL PASO, Texas —

A 44-year-old Socorro resident is facing drug smuggling charges after federal officials said they found more than 400 pounds of drugs stashed in his vehicle.

Around 5 a.m. Saturday, the man attempted to cross into the United States at the Ysleta international crossing in a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu.

The car was selected for a second examination by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, and their X-ray system detected irregularities with the vehicle.

Officers then found bundles of marijuana hidden in the car's doors, quarter panels and seats, and they seized 396 bundles weighing a total of 411 pounds, officials said.

"CBP officers remain focused and vigilant as they perform their homeland security mission," said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso port director. "Significant quantities of illegal drugs were stopped at the border because of the layers of enforcement we employ every day."

The 44-year-old man was turned over to federal agents, and he was booked into the El Paso County Jail without bond.
