EL PASO, Texas —

About 40 pounds of narcotics were seized in two separate incidents at the Paso Del Norte international crossing this weekend, officials said.

"These interdictions remove a sizable amount of cocaine and heroin from the streets of our communities and the reach of our youth," said Norman Bebon, CBP El Paso assistant port director. "These noteworthy seizures highlight CBP's determination to serve this nation in protecting our homeland."

U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized 28.16 pounds of cocaine around 11 p.m. Friday when a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier attempted to cross into the United States, officials said.

The vehicle was selected for a secondary exam, and a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the gas tank, officials said. Officers found 11 bundles of cocaine.

Maria Calderon Garcia, 20, of Juarez was arrested for the failed drug smuggling attempt.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, officers seized 10.34 pounds of heroin when a 2013 Toyota Camry entered the international crossing from Mexico.

As with the first incident, a secondary exam and a drug-sniffing dog were ordered. Officers found a suit case in the trunk and removed six bundles that were concealed within the suit case lining and backpack, officials said.

Clinton Stout, 36, of Langhorn, Pa. was arrested as a result of the seizure.
