Officials: Elderly couple safely escapes apartment fire

EL PASO, Texas —

An elderly couple escaped an east El Paso apartment after it caught fire Friday morning.

At around 10:17 a.m., fire crews responded to the Americas Palms Apartments located at 12311 Lorenzo Ruiz Ave.

Seven units and 19 firefighters responded, and fire crews saw dark smoke coming out of the front door of an apartment, officials said.

The fire, which started in a bedroom, was out in less than five minutes, officials said.

The couple safely escaped the home, officials said.

The room sustained heavy fire damage and the apartment had heavy smoke damage throughout, officials said. The damage was estimated at $50,000.

The couple is working with property managers to find another place to stay, officials said.
