SOCORRO, Texas —

The man killed in Monday night's deadly crash in east El Paso was identified as Paul Wayne Tims, a city of Socorro spokesman said.

Tims, 60, is listed as a Clint resident, but Socorro spokesman David Garcia said he was known as a Socorro resident.

The I-10 East on-ramp near Gateway East Boulevard and Horizon Boulevard reopened after the truck Tims was driving crashed into a semitruck.

The accident happened at 8:46 p.m. Monday, officers said Tims died instantly after he rear-ended a semi-truck on the access road.

Garcia told KFOX14 Tims may have been going at a high rate of speed, and that there were no signs he ever tried to stop.

"He never touched the brakes as he drove under the trailer," said Garcia

Garcia said there were no signs of skid marks. The whole front end of the truck was crushed from the impact.

"The tractor trailer was attempting to get on to the ramp," said Garcia, "The white Chevrolet pick-up never, ever touched his brakes, never stopped, just drove under the trailer.

As a medical examiner arrived, firefighters had to use the "jaws of life" to remove the body from the wreckage.

Garcia told KFOX14 the driver of the semi-truck was devastated by what happened.

"It's been a tragic moment for him, we are now putting all the investigation together, but it looks like the man [Tims] was alone," said Garcia.

Investigators said the semi-truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. They warn other drivers to always use caution when driving near a big rig.

"These trucks can't accelerate as fast as a pick-up truck or any other type of vehicle," said Garcia, "It's very easy for everybody to be accelerating, on to the freeway and suddenly come upon a vehicle that's moving slower.

The investigation is pending toxicology and autopsy reports, Garcia said.
