EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police are investigating after an officer fired his weapon trying to save a 7-year-old girl from an attacking dog.

Darrel Petry with the El Paso Police Department said late Friday evening, the plain-clothes police officer saw the young girl struggling with the dog. The officer left his unmarked city car to help the girl. But then, the dog turned on him. The officer then fired one shot into the air, scaring the dog. The dog then ran away from the two.

No one was hit by the bullet. Police confirm El Paso Animal Control has the dog. No word yet on if the dog has an owner or if they will be fined.

The 7-year-old only suffered minor injuries in the attack.
