EL PASO, Texas —
It's a case of political activism gone too far, some say.
An Anthony, Texas, sign has many Borderland residents upset but the man who put it up is smiling. As Americans head into a presidential election and after hugely popular college football coach, Joe Paterno, is fired over scandal, Jody Kincaid thought he'd take advantage of both current events and made a sign that says, "Fire Obama, Not Paterno."
Kincaid is a veterinarian but considers himself a political activist as well. Apart from frequently posting signs in front of his clinic related to current events, he is the founder of the "Survival Club of Anthony," a group he says calls educational forums and otherwise considers current events and how to live better in general.
"In order to get people to challenge their thought processess, you usually have to shake them up a little bit," Kincaid said. "I have had people come and say, 'I hate what you're saying out there.' And I say, 'Fine, let's talk about the facts,' and they may not agree with me at the end, but we can start a dialogue. Like I say, 'It makes people think!'"
Brothers Carlos and Aaron Hernandez are among those who said they don't like the sign. They said they don't consider themselves Obama supporters and do not follow college football very closely.
"I don't blame (Obama) all the time, but since he's in charge, a lot of people look at him as the one to blame," Carlos Hernandez, 25, said. His brother especially did not like what the sign said about Paterno.
"Kids, you don't touch kids, man. That's just wrong. And if (Paterno) knew about it, that's going to be a bad thing, man. He got lucky if he just got fired," Aaron Hernandez, 30, said.
Paterno allegedly was told about sexual abuse involving one of his assistance coaches and reported it. He said he would retire at the end of the college football season, but Pennsylvania State University trustees fired him before he could.
Kincaid said that having the Hernandez brothers and others talk about the sign is exactly what he wants to happen. He showed KFOX-14 where angry residents had shot at his clinic with some type of weapon because they didn't like a sign he put up during the 2010 midterm election season.
He says he doesn't think this sign will cause that strong of a reaction, but would love to talk about it's message with anyone who is interested. See the KFOX-14 Facebook page for more comments regarding the sign or create an account and comment below.
