No bidders for Santa Teresa Country Club or golf courses

Residents worry unsuccessful auction will hurt their property values

By Samantha Manning

SANTA TERESA, N.M. —

Santa Teresa Country Club residents told KFOX14 they feel they are still without a resolution, following an auction Wednesday for the country club and two golf courses that ended without a single bidder.

The country club was at a minimum bid of $292,075. The north course had a minimum bid of $210,900 and the south course had a minimum bid of $97,950.

"It's very, very disappointing," Santa Teresa Country Club resident Joan Lynde said.

The land was up for auction because the owner, Greg Collins, owes more than a half-million dollars in unpaid property taxes.

Without any bidders, the land still belongs to Collins.

"The property stays with the current owner," Dona Ana County Treasurer David Gutierrez said.

The problem with that, residents said, is that Collins hasn't maintained the land at all.

Residents said Collins has allowed weeds and dead grass to cover the golf courses.

"It's just going to keep on degrading in its quality of golf courses," Santa Teresa Country Club resident Dorothy Gault-McNemee said.

"It just leaves us in limbo," Lynde said. "We don't know whether to spend more money on our homes, put our homes up for sale."

The state said the property will be re-auctioned at a later date and said the land will belong to Collins until there is a bidder.

KFOX14 reached out to Collins several times but he has not yet returned our phone calls.
