LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Authorities said a New Mexico State University student who was found injured Saturday most likely died after jumping from a 27-foot-tall barn while high on drugs.

Around 7 a.m., Eric Morris, 23, was found unconscious near the intersection of Stewart and Knox streets on the west side of the Las Cruces campus, university police said. They said he had severe head and torso injuries. Morris was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

NMSU police had reported that Morris was struck by a car and left behind.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Morris was still breathing but couldn't respond to their questions. Medical staff said Morris suffered severe head and torso injuries.

Barefoot footprints were found on top of a nearby bull barn, New Mexico State University Police Chief Jaime Chavez announced Monday afternoon, and preliminary autopsy reports revealed extensive internal injuries as well as the presence of cocaine, angel dust and the active compound in marijuana.

Authorities did not immediately say if they believed Morris was trying to kill himself.
