NMSU prepares for renovations from GO bond funds

By Samantha Manning

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

New Mexico State University is making plans to allocate the funds from the general obligation bond voters passed in November that will help renovate parts of the school's campuses.

Nineteen million dollars is going toward the main campus in Las Cruces, which will mainly help renovate Jacobs and Hardman Halls, both of which are several decades old.

"It's really the first impression that many people have of a class at NMSU and they're pretty dilapidated," NMSU Architect Greg Walke said.

"Most of the desks are either like not working properly so you can't get the drawer down or they're just really old," NMSU student Calvin Larson said.

"It's not exciting to learn in," NMSU student Cody Kirk said. "It's kind of boring. It makes you want to fall asleep."

Walke said the goal is to turn the buildings into a state-of-the-art undergraduate student learning center and the school may even end up deciding to combine the buildings.

Dona Ana Community College's campus is also getting $1 million for infrastructure renovations, including roof replacements.

Walke said the school is expecting to have construction on Hardman and Jacobs Halls complete by the summer of 2015.

The school isn't sure yet whether the buildings will be closed during the renovations.
