Violence Against Women Spotlight At NMSU

March 29, 2006 —

"I hope people can walk through these crosses, see each dress that represents each woman killed and ponder how important life is," said Cynthia Bejarano, Associate Professor of Crimina Justice at New Mexico State University.

Hundreds of pink crosses stand outside the campus remebering the hundreds of women who have fallen, killed by violence. Bejarano, one of the organizers of a three day symposium for violence against women says there should be responsibility and accountability on both sides of the border because both communities are linked together. "So what affects that side of the border affects us here," said Bejarano.

NMSU is calling attention to what they say has been a decade-long killing spree of women in Juarez and advocates say there continues to be no real resolution. They accuse the Mexican government of whitewashing the situation.
