LAS CRUCES, NM —
The New Mexico State University Aggies (24-11,14-4 WAC) basketball season has come to an end after they fell 64-44 to the 13th-ranked Saint Louis Billikens (28-6,13-3 Atlantic 10).
The Aggies were down at halftime by a score of 29-16. They were able to cut the deficit to within 6 points during the second half, but Saint Louis was able to pull away and blow the game open.
KFOX14 spoke with Aggie fans at a sports bar in Las Cruces about how they are taking the loss.
"They just needed to be a little bit more assertive, you know, and I think they were not doing that in the first half, but in the second half, they impressed me, they got within 6 points," said Brian Trego. "It's kinda tough, you get tired after going through the WAC, and you have to go through these big guys, these big teams like Louisville."
Some Aggie fans told KFOX14 that they thought nerves got the best of the team.
"They tried hard and they have a lot of heart, but I think they were too nervous. You could tell with some of the fouls that they got and all the balls they were fumbling," said one fan.
"I think it was a good game. I think we were a little nervous, we didn't play like we normally do, but I think it was still good. We played hard, like we always do," said another.
Most of the fans KFOX14 spoke with said they are very optimistic about next season, and they think NMSU had a good run this year.
"They did well, I mean, my hat is off to them, coach did a great job coaching them, and they had a great season," Trego said.
NMSU has not won an NCAA tournament game since 1993, when they beat Nebraska in the opening round.
