NMSU Athletics Making History This Fall

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A collegiate soccer program is now at New Mexico State University and the decision to bring one here probably wasn't difficult.

“It is history and it's very exciting. There's a lot of great stuff going on and this is a soccer rich region. I think the borderland has a lot of good players.

Players will be representing cities on both sides of the border.

“We recruited actually three girls from Las Cruces and three girls from El Paso as well,” said Needham.

The coach said for the programs first season the goals are simple.

“To come together as a group would be the first one, to work harder than anybody else, to be fitter than anybody else and my ultimate as a result based goal would be to make the WAC conference tournament,” he said.

And because the program is so fresh and new, this could help them achieve all of those goals.

“These kids are going to come in an environment where the sky’s the limit for them, there is no pressure on them and that makes a team pretty dangerous,” said Needham.

The women’s soccer team’s first game in school history will take place in El Paso with the battle of Interstate 10. The game will not only be in the history books for NMSU, but for the region as well.

“He (UTEP’s coach) has a great environment down there he'll have the place rowled up and ready to go you know I think it will be the most exciting game this region's seen in a little while,” said Needham.
