NM Governor Tries To Restore Child Care Cuts

EL PASO, Texas —

After child care assistance received budget cuts, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson plans to use expected funding, which was recently passed by Congress, to boost child care services in New Mexico.

The budget cuts are said to be trimmed from 8 percent to 4 percent, making about $8.7 million available for child care provider budgets.

The money would allow the state to have the childcare assistance through the rest of the budget year, which ends in June 2011.

Two million dollars in federal stimulus money has been provided by the government to help offset some of the federal and legislative cuts to child care services.
