New Year Starts Pronunciation Debate

EL PASO, Texas —

When midnight strikes, we begin the 10th year of the third millennium and 21st century. We also start the first year of this decade. While it hasn't even started this year is already sparking debate.

We all knew to party like it was 1999, but this year is bringing in some confusion. It's already New Year's Eve and it's time to decide. Is there a wrong way or a right way to pronounce the new year?

"Twenty ten, I don't think that sounds good. I think two thousand ten sounds better," said west El Pasoan Keith McGregor

Robert Brower however said, "twenty ten...it's shorter, most people go for the short hand, rather than the full verbage."

If two thousand ten takes too long then why have we been saying two thousand nine?

"When it comes to I guess double digits at the end, it makes it easier. Twenty ten as opposed to two thousand ten, that's the difference," said Minerva of west El Paso.

"I think everybody's going to go for the shorter version, just cause it's shorter, and everybody's lazy," said McGregor.

In the end we will choose between three words, four syllables, and two words, two syllables. It seems, however, New Year's resolutions, not pronunciations, are more important to some El Pasoans.

"To get more money, that's about it," said McGregor. "Quit smoking," said Brower.

One option that no one agreed with was two oh one oh.
