Sun Metro's Operations and maintenance staff will be moving out of the historic Union Depotin downtown El Paso because they do not have enough room to accommodate new buses they will be receiving.

"Our maintenancefacility can't accommodate 60-foot vehicles. You're working on the same type of vehiclesbut it's a much larger vehicle and so in order to be able, you need more room. The city is growing so we're going to need more space," said Laura Cruz-Acosta, public affair coordinator for Sun Metro.

They will move to a new location on Montana, between Yarbrough and Wedgewood. The construction is already well under way. Cruz-Acosta said the new routes for the new buses will first be seen running along Mesa Street and Alameda Ave., followed by routes along Dyer Street and Montana Ave.

The new buses will be able to carry up to about 70 people and will have accordion-like centers.

"It's an extreme express service similar to a light rail, except you're going to be using it on rubber tires. The vehicles are going to be much larger. They're 60-foot vehicles that will be able to carry more people in them and will have fewer stops. They're also going to be using different technology," said Cruz-Acosta.

The new system is supposed to begin in early 2014.
