AUSTIN, Texas —

A new bill in the Texas House of Representatives, could spell the end for Socorro City Council's annexation plan.

The bill sponsored by State Rep. Mary Gonzalez, D-El Paso, takes the power of annexation approval away from the City Council, into the hands of the people, in a public vote on the matter.

"This way the constituents who want to have their opinions listened to, can make their opinions heard through a vote," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said this bill would only apply to the Socorro annexation issue, and not the other municipalities in Texas.
