New State, Local Laws Go Into Effect Tuesday

EL PASO, Texas —

Starting Tuesday, it’s going to cost more to live and have a car in El Paso as several city and state laws take effect.

Parking fees at city meters will go up from 50 cents an hour to 75 cents.

Crossing the border at certain locations will also see an uptick in cost. To cross the border at El Paso-operated bridges, the fees for pedestrians will increase from 35 cents to 50 cents. Fee hike would be two quarters. The fee for vehicles to cross at a city-operated border crossing will go up from $2.25 to $2.75.

For pedestrians, those fees apply the Zaragoza Bridge, Paso Del Norte also known as the Sante Fe crossing, and the Stanton bridge. Cars will see the increase at the Zaragoza and Stanton bridges.

It’s also going to cost more to take a family to the zoo. For adults, admission to the El Paso Zoo will double, jumping from $5 to $10. For seniors and members of the military, the cost will go from $4 to $7.50. For children, admission goes from $3 to $6.

When it comes to the state, buckle up. Starting Tuesday, all passengers will have wear a seatbelt anywhere in the car. Children 8 years old and younger will have to be in a car seat, and drivers under the age of 18 can not use a cell phone to talk or text message while driving.

Drivers also will not be able to use a hand-held cell phone while driving through a school zone.
