New Mexico Bond D Could Raise Millions For NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

In less than 48 hours, thousands of New Mexicans will be hitting the poles, but some people want to remind voters that there's more than just politicians on the ballot.

"I'm encouraging everyone to turn the back side of the ballot. It's the very last part of the ballot. Don't give up, you might get tired of penciling in your votes on the front page but on the very back of the ballot is those bonds," said Dona Ana Community College President Dr. Margie Huerta.

There's a reason Huerta wants voters to pay attention to the bond issues, especially bond D. If passed, bond D will generate over $155 million for New Mexico colleges -- $18 million of that for New Mexico State University's main campus and over $5 million for DACC's Gadsden center. The money is for renovation, expansion and refurbishing of buildings.

"Coming back and getting more education when the economy is bad, is actually what people do and those are the trends nationwide, so right now with all these students returning to school, wanting to get a job or get a better paying job, it's critical for the support of New Mexicans on these bonds," said Huearta.

Of course the money has to come from somewhere. If passed, property taxes will increase yearly by about $10 for every $100,000 of your homes assessed value.

"Go out and vote. We need you. Education is the best investment any community can do and for the little that we pay in taxes and we get that great return, it's wonderful," said Huerta.

Election Day is Tuesday. To see the other bonds on the ballot, just go to the links mentioned section of this website.
