New Mexicans Make Smarter Choices To Cope With Rising Gas Prices

Gas prices are reaching record highs in New Mexico. The price of fuel for regular unleaded gasoline in Las Cruces is about $3.30 a gallon. Despite the high cost, people still hit the road to celebrate Memorial Day.

"I thought we might have a little bit of a drop in our El Paso crowd, but they were out here yesterday," said Dawn Starostka, event organizer for Southern New Mexico Wine Festival.

"My guess is maybe they decided not to go all the way to the lake. They stayed a little bit closer to home.

Starostka said she saw people come from as far away as New York, Arizona and closer to home in El Paso. But many event goers who came from afar said they were only able to travel so far with gas prices as high as they are, because they were already in town after long-planned visits.

"We don't have too many wine festivals that go on in Austin, so we decided to come out here and see what it was like," said Amanda Alvarez, of Austin, Texas.
