City Rep., city website
EL PASO, Texas —
Eastside district 5 City Council Rep. Michael Noe spent a day trying to inform constituents about a new roundabout.
Noe said as the city draws new district lines, it will be more difficult for him to keep his constituents involved in decisions that affect them.
All of the proposed new maps cut out the western part of Noe’s district. He said that's the part of the district with the most active community members.
"I'm going to lose some good people,” Noe said. “There are good people around Album park. These are very involved, very intelligent people."
Noe will go door to door to recruit political interest from the younger generation. He said that typically those people are not as involved in local politics.
“They've got a lot of stuff to do and a lot of things on their minds,” Noe said. “They may not have as much time as some of the more seasoned citizens we have here."
Noe said he understands that redrawing district lines comes with growth. He just wants to make sure that everyone left in his district knows that they have a voice in the community.
"My district grew almost 60 percent,” Noe said. “I had around 111,000 people where there were districts with almost nothing in them. I'm going to have to work a lot harder to get out to the younger generation, let them know who I am and what I can do for them."
Whichever proposed map is chosen, it’ll go into effect in 2013.
